innogy Gas Storage NWE GmbH (iGSNWE) is a gas storage provider in the northwest European gas market who aims to offer its customers flexible and customized products and services. With natural gas storage facilities at five locations in Germany, innogy lines up competitively with other European storage providers.
To take better advantage of market opportunities and gain a competitive edge, innogy decided to consolidate the two caverns storage Epe H-Gas and Xanten into a single storage facility in terms of marketing and to set up a storage pool. This unique feature is meant to enhance operational potentials and offer customers even more reliable storage with an absolute minimum of maintenance times.
The joining of the two physical natural gas storage facilities, Epe H-Gas and Xanten, along with the range of services and products made possible by it, required additional optimization of operational processes and availability of these storages.
The complex challenges called for extensive restructuring of our nomination management, contract management and customer portal. In addition to the business requirements that are entailed with joining these storage facilities, we have also adapted our market communication to the AS2/AS4 standards.
Alongside the technical requirements, the new transaction system is meant to significantly reduce current IT costs while also enabling the greatest possible scalability and future security. For this reason implementation at all levels is being realized in the Amazon cloud (AWS).
Due to the allotted project timeline of only nine months and the geographic separation of team members in Dortmund, Prague and Leipzig, efficient project management during all project phases was key to successfully replacing the existing system.
By choosing EXXETA GmbH (EXXETA) and EXXETA Operations Solution for SSO during a complex tender procedure in 2016, innogy decided to go with an innovative and experienced partner.
Together with the technical departments in Dortmund and Prague, it was possible to meet the deadline for switching from the existing systems for contract management, nomination management, the customer portal and market communication. As a result of EXXETA’s extensive and market-specific expertise, special cases in the iGSNWE portfolio were accommodated and a great degree of transaction automation realized.
The main focus was on optimizing the new storage pool, innEXpool, consisting of two separate storage facilities. In compliance with mining regulations, the following goals have been realized:
- Increasing the degree of utilization of storage assets;
- Cost optimization of the compressor operation through optimal utilization;
- Integration of a cavern simulation based on mathematical models to optimize the virtual storage characteristics.
The new transaction system, which has been in operation since April 1, 2017, after going live without any complications, enables the provision of flexible products for the customers of iGSNWE and contributes positively, in cooperation with the entry and exits points, to stability and flexibility in the Thyssengas network.
